August 30 continued

A half hour ride into the town of Hoedspruit. Sights were wonderful… groves of oranges, lemons, mangos, roadside stands with produce and tourist souvenirs! Then we start making our way up into the mountains and into the Mpumalanga province.

The Blyde River Canyon is the third largest canyon in the world (#1 – Grand Canyon, # 2 – Fish River Canyon, Namibia) and my first official stop on this tour. Unofficial stops for photos have been brief. Very pretty area. The landscape is so different from the low level bush area I have been in, yet we have not traveled a great distance.

The spot where two rivers merge to form Bourke’s Luck Potholes is the beginning of Blyde River Canyon. The rivers have worn away the limestone in fabulous formations and detail. This hike into the where the rivers meet was beautiful. Barney shared his knowledge of the area and info about the Zulu naming of the rivers. I could have spent hours photographing this area. I hope to schedule a full day in this area when I next return.

  1. The colors& textures of the canyon, gorgecare remarkable., love the deep blue contrast to the earth tones. Amazed that some of the photos have give a "lush" feel to landscape. I bet the fresh citrus smelled divine, and a welcome 'snack'.
