August 28 continued

Evening drive was a soggy one! It rained quite a bit, although on occasion rain let up enough that we took our ponchos off. I managed to keep camera dry, but it was a struggle!

We saw two herds of elephants, including our not so friendly bull in musk. He aggressively chased us away again! Quite a feeling to have an elephant chasing you when you are sitting in the furthest rear seat! I have really enjoyed watching the many calves with these herds and how they interact with the adults. We watched the full herd of Cape Buffalo for a bit. Again, there are many calves. The adults are watchful and protective. The calves are easy prey for many animals. After sunset we saw bushbaby and a civet (small cat like mammal).

Our not so friendly male in musk.

Kenneth, tracker for our vehicle.

Kenneth and Iwan tracking rhino close to camp.

Dinner menu tonight sweet potato soup followed by venison pie and pork neck (hmmmm…). I have been a bit confused by the term venison being used at various meals. I know there are no “deer” in South Africa. Venison refers to any game. So I guess the venison pie could be impala, buffalo, ostrich, or anything else! Sides included mashed potatoes and corn pie. Lemon sponge cake with sauce for dessert. All of the desserts have been served warm (if not, hot) and have been delicious.

Iwan, Tricia, Alexis, Phil, Ingrid and I sat around talking and laughing until after midnight. More laughs and fun than I have had in years. A special night that will remain a warm memory for many years. I am saddened to know that they will all be leaving tomorrow. The atmosphere at the lodge will surely change.
